The Kansas City Star

After moving to Kansas City, I was struck by the number of tower cranes protruding from the city’s growing skyline. I pitched this story early in my internship, and it turned into my long term project. For weeks the union refused to give me access, but eventually relented. I shot photos and filed a FOIA request while reporting this story.

This story started as a look at a local historical society and its acquisition of a collection of photographs. After interviewing Steve Noll, I knew this story could be much bigger. It moved from an A4 (one of the smallest stories in the features section) to an A1 (the dominant first page story in the section).

I shadowed two KC-area photographers experimenting with this old technique in an attempt to recapture their pre-digital love for photography.
